  2. [S418] Kemble: Kemble, Location: Albuquerque, NM, Albuquerque Journal Published September 25, 2007 KEMBLE -- Helen Kemble, wife for 58 years of former New Mexico Military Institute, Lamar (Texas State) University President and NM Cabinet Secretary for Public Safety, Robert Kemble, died Sunday, 22 September. Helen Kemble's life exemplified service: to her family, her community, and her country; in partnership roles in her husband's varied professional positions and in many pro bono community and charitable activities. Helen was born in August of 1923 of Julia and Carl Elfstrom in Sandwich, Illinois and was raised lovingly in firm Protestant Midwest style in Centerville, Iowa during the Depression Era. She graduated from high school six months before the attack on Pearl Harbor and was by all accounts a very self-reliant young lady. Schooled in the frugal ways of the Depression period, she attended the junior college while also working at a series of other jobs; and with the US entry into WWII, she became secretary to the county draft board. Her interests turned to aviation. Using her earned monies, she took flying lessons, becoming at age eighteen the first licensed female pilot in southern Iowa. She subsequently joined the Civil Air Patrol, training to meet the nation's requirements of the times and providing assistance when called upon. Her reputation as a reliable young employee came to the attention of newspaper publisher and multi-term Congressman Karl LeCompte who hired her in 1946. Helen's move to Washington was a sharp departure from life in Iowa but she was quickly given substantial responsibilities as LeCompte's personal secretary and his Iowa campaign assistant. She met her future husband, C. Robert "Bob" Kemble, when he came to Washington to thank the congressman for his appointment to West Point during the Battle of the Bulge. They married shortly after Bob's USMA graduation in 1949. Appropriately LeCompte, who altered both their lives, was named the Godfather of their first child. Helen's most important role was as an influential mother: industrious, caring, and ethical. Throughout Bob's several professional positions in the US and abroad she was his talented and helpful partner. She was his supportive Army wife in Germany during the early 50's when the Soviets were repeatedly threatening invasion. She was next an active faculty spouse during Bob's ten years as a professor/administrator at West Point and was President of the West Point Officers Wives Association with 1200 members. Subsequently, she served for fifteen years as "First Lady" to Bob as a college and university president with those attendant public representational and related demands. Finally, for four years in yet another professional milieu, Helen was a New Mexico Cabinet Secretary's wife. Thus, for fifty years Helen handled demanding public, private and family roles quietly, gracefully and effectively, earning the admiration and affection of hundreds. All the while and continuing, volunteer service projects were her hallmark. Always organized and an organizer, Helen filled other such positions as Division Head in numerous United Way Campaigns and board member/ director for symphony orchestras and art museums, including the New Mexico Art Museum in Albuquerque. During her last twenty years in Albuquerque she provided thousand of hours of productive work and leadership to the Albuquerque Assistant League and its extensive donations to worthy local causes. She is survived by her husband, Charles Robert Kemble of Albuquerque; five children and sixteen grandchildren, Christopher Kemble of Milwaukee, WI Keith Eilene Kemble of Great Falls, MT Cynthia Lawshe of Pheonix, AZ Geoffrey Kemble of Charlotte, NC Carol Kemble of Portland, OR. Reflecting the international flavor of the Kemble lives, two grandchildren are adopted from China and two from Kazakhstan. There will be an informal "memorial open house" for friends at the Kemble residence, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Thursday, September 26.

Note(Research):

According to Ida I. Adams and William W. Adams, the family lost contact with Minnie sometime in the 1930s or 1940s. Her husband was employed in the sugar business and the couple traveled extensively. According to family lore, her husband invented the sugar cube.
NoteMary Jane Adams was also known as Minnie. She used a variety of ages based upon stated age at a stated time. The earliest record is the ship manifest on the S. S. Peruvian. On the manifest she was shown as age 1. Using May 10 the day the ship sailed as the H1 date gives the date of birth of between 11 May 1881 and 10 May 1882. Shows her alleged birth date is the 1927 passenger list where she reports her date of birth as October 9, 1889. Since that is the only specific date, I am using October 9 as a month and day of birth. I am using 1881 as her year of birth based upon her age shown on the S. S. Peruvian manifest. I'm using Ireland as a Place of birth based upon the S. S. Peruvian manifest.

Additional research is required to determine the actual date and place of birth.9
